Old Bridge Street Burying Ground ~ Beyond the Stone Wall ~ Gloucester, MA

The Second Half of the Old Bridge Street Burying Grounds

As you wander away from the street, you'll find the grounds are much more overgrown.  Briers and choking vines have taken over with beautiful grasses that would be labeled ornamental and a huge price tag put on them at any nursery.  But here, they grow wild.  It's quieter back beyond the stone wall.  It's lonelier.  More somber.  Forgotten stones that nonetheless reflect the powerful grief of those moments in time so long ago.

If you make it this far, tread softly and slowly.  Look, really look, as if you're searching for one of your own.  These stones, these people belonged to someone.  Someone cried over their placement.  Time and lack of money, maybe a lack of memory for them have caused them to deteriorate, but they are still here.  Reminders of lives that meant something to those who knew them.

I hope you find the quiet beauty in this place through my photos that I felt while walking it.

Thank-you, While looking at your photos I noticed a headstone of a long-lost family member. With the help of your photo and my family records I was able to make the connection. It is the Thomas Riggs headstone, I wish it was in better shape. Thanks again.
